COMMON WARNING LIGHTS
BATTERY
The 12V battery charge warning lamp illuminates briefly when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on to check the bulb is working. As soon as the engine is started, the light should go out. If it doesn’t, or it comes on while you’re driving, there’s a fault with the charging system.
SEAT BELT
When the vehicle is in motion if a passenger’s belt is unbuckled then the warning lamp will illuminate, accompanied by a chime. The lamp extinguishes when the relevant seat belt is buckled. This light will also come on if you place a heavy item like a bag on a seat (not recommended).
HANDBRAKE, BRAKE SYSTEM
The brake warning lamp illuminates briefly when the ignition is switched on. It should go out and stay off while you’re driving. If it comes on, you could have a fault in your brake system or be running low on brake fluid. Stop as soon as you safely can do so, check the fluid level and top up if necessary. If the light stays on, call us.
TRIANGLE CRITICAL WARNING
The red triangle symbol indicates a critical warning – the instrument panel will also show a message about the issue.
EXHAUST DEF
If the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) warning lamp illuminates, the level of DEF is seriously low. Follow the on-screen messages as your Land Rover will not run when the DEF reservoir has run dry. The lamp also illuminates if the incorrect fluid has been added to the system, or if there is a fault with the system. Call us straight away.
ENGINE TEMPERATURE
The engine temperature warning lamp illuminates when the engine’s temperature is too high. Carrying on could irreparably damage your engine so stop as soon as you can!!
DPF EXHAUST FILTER
The exhaust filter warning lamp illuminates when the DPF exhaust filter is full or blocked or there is a fault with the exhaust filter system and has failed to regenerate or clear. There are multiple reasons why this could occur. We follow the Land Rover test plan to find out exactly what is going wrong. This blockage can be caused by underuse or driving style. It is important to get this looked at straight away to avoid further damage.
LANE DEPARTURE WARNING
When the lane departure feature is active, you should always use your direction indicators before crossing a lane marking. If you don’t do so, the red lane departure warning lamp will illuminate (showing which lane boundary you’ve crossed). You will also feel a vibration through the steering wheel.
LOW OIL PRESSURE
If the low oil pressure warning lamp flashes or comes on while you’re driving, stop the vehicle as soon as you can safely do so. Switch off the engine immediately. Check and top up the oil level, if necessary. Start the engine. If the lamp remains illuminated, switch the engine off and contact roadside assistance to be recovered straight to us!
HILL DESCENT CONTROL
The Hill Descent Control (HDC) lamp illuminates continuously when the HDC system is selected and the system is controlling a steep descent. If the lamp flashes, HDC has been selected, but the operating conditions are not being met or HDC fade-out is occurring.
AIRBAG
The airbag warning lamp illuminates, as a bulb check, when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on. The lamp extinguishes after 6 seconds. If the lamp illuminates again, there is a fault with the airbag system. Contact us as soon as possible.
ABS
The ABS warning lamp illuminates briefly when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on. If the lamp remains on, or illuminates while driving, there is a fault with the ABS system. Drive with care, avoiding heavy braking. This is a safety issue and needs immediate attention.
BRAKE
The brake warning lamp illuminates briefly when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on. If the lamp illuminates after starting the engine, or while driving, your Land Rover’s brake pads could be worn. Alternatively, there could be a fault with the braking system. You can still drive with care but call us to get booked in soon!
CHECK ENGINE
The check engine warning lamp will illuminate when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on but goes out once the engine starts. If it comes on when the engine is running, an emissions-related fault has been detected. The vehicle remains safe to drive with the lamp illuminated but reduce the vehicle’s speed as soon as it is safe to do so and contact us!
While the lamp is illuminated, the engine may also enter limp-home mode, reducing the engine power to prevent damage.
DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL
The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) lamp flashes briefly when the system is actively working, such as intervening to prevent wheelspin. If there is a fault with the system, it will stay on and the instrument panel will show a warning message. The vehicle can still be driven, but DSC won’t be operating. As this is an important safety system this needs sorting straight away.
DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL OFF
The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) OFF warning lamp illuminates when the system is switched off. The lamp is accompanied by a chime and a confirmation message in the instrument panel.
EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE
The lamp illuminates to warn you that the temperature may be low enough for ice to form on the road surface.
FOLLOW MODE
This lamp illuminates when the adaptive cruise control system is in follow mode.
AMBER TRIANGLE GENERAL MESSAGE
The general warning amber information message lamp illuminates when a non-critical warning message, or an information message, is showing on the instrument panel.
GLOW PLUGS (DIESEL MODELS)
The glow plug lamp illuminates amber when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on, to indicate that the glow plugs are active. The lamp will go out once the engine is running.
LOW FUEL WARNING
The low fuel warning lamp illuminates when the fuel level is low, indicating that you should stop for fuel at the earliest opportunity. The arrow shows which side of the vehicle the fuel filler flap is located.
REAR FOG LIGHTS
The rear fog lights indicator lamp remains on when the rear fog lights are switched on.
TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (AMBER)
The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) lamp illuminates when one or more tyres are significantly under-inflated. The instrument panel also displays a warning message. Stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. Check the tyre pressures. Inflate to the recommended pressure. I
